📖 Last month, Westpac announced a new philanthropic focus on education, investing in Australian primary schools to strengthen literacy and numeracy as foundations for social mobility. This week, Westpac CEO Anthony Miller returned to where his education began. As part of the new initiative, he’s mentoring a school principal in Dubbo, drawing on his experience leading a large organisation. “We had to be honest about where we can really make a difference,” Miller said. “We’re not education experts. Our role is to back the people who are.” ➡️ Read more about why his visit to Dubbo matters - and how it connects to Westpac’s new philanthropic direction - in the latest Wire story: https://lnkd.in/guF4thc2

Some challenges feel too big to ignore. Right now, 1 in 3 Australian children aren’t meeting national benchmarks in reading and maths, a gap that’s even wider in disadvantaged communities. And when kids miss these foundations, the effects last a lifetime. We’re proud to announce a new direction for Westpac that brings our community and philanthropic efforts under one shared goal: improving education. We marked this commitment at Plumpton Primary School in Sydney, where Westpac CEO Anthony Miller, former NSW Education Minister Hon Adrian Piccoli, Member for Campbelltown Greg Warren and Principal Ms Larkin joined students and educators to launch this renewed focus. We’ll be investing $3 million in our incredible partners, Australian Schools Plus, ABCN and Te Uru Amokura | Springboard Trust, who are already working to deliver systemic change in schools. Our Foundations will deliver a unified grants program, awarding $4 million annually to schools and community organisations supporting student engagement and learning. This commitment builds on our decade-long investment in education through the Westpac Scholars Trust, and extending our focus earlier, from kindergarten through to Year 6, where the foundations are set. It’s about giving every child, no matter where they live, the chance to build the basic skills that shape their future.
