  • ANZAC Day marks the anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915, where members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps came ashore at what is now known as ANZAC Cove (near Ari Burnu). One lesser-known aspect of the campaign is the extent of the terrain itself; the plan was for troops to come ashore south toward Gaba Tepe. Instead, they landed a few kilometres north of their intended target. This change in location significantly altered the battlefield, shaping how the battle unfolded from the very first day. Many of the ridgelines and gullies were so steep and confined that movement was often restricted to narrow paths, soldiers became disoriented failing to arrive at the correct meeting points. What military planners expected to be achieved within days or weeks becoming a stalemate that lasted 8 months. While Gallipoli did not achieve its strategic objectives, it became a defining moment in shaping the national identity of both Australia and New Zealand. The resilience, courage, and mateship shown during this time continue to underpin the ANZAC legacy. Tomorrow, wherever we may be, we pause to reflect on the resilience, courage, and mateship demonstrated during the Gallipoli campaign - qualities that continue to shape the values associated with the ANZAC legacy. It is also an opportunity to recognise the role Swordfish plays in strengthening our national defence capabilities, ensuring those who serve have the tools, systems and support they need to minimise the impact of war on Australia as a whole. As we approach ANZAC Day, we acknowledge not only those who served at Gallipoli, but all who have contributed in service since. Their commitment and sacrifice remain an enduring part of our shared history and continue to reflect a collective purpose: protecting our people, our values, and our way of life. “They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.” #ANZACDay #LestWeForget
