🛤️#RailSafety26 is underway + kicking shared goals celebrating some of the biggest changes to rail since electrification⚡
Here are some key messages from a high voltage morning agenda:
⏭️ "Thank you for what you do!"Hon Josh Bull MP thanked industry for delivering significant projects that benefit communities + commuters and provided a summary of some of the exciting infrastructure projects and network upgrades committed to in the recent Victorian budget.
⏭️ Australian Rail Industry Standards Organisation's transformative role in shaping a new standards era. ARISO's work on standards will be the bedrock to needed changes, so join them to shape the future.
⏭️ The National Transport Commission's Michael Hopkins detailed how Australia is transforming its rail system through the National Rail Action Plan to create a safer, more productive, and interoperable national network, highlighted by the historic agreement to adopt the European Train Control System (#ETCS) as the national digital train control standard. "Herding cats” to get nine gov'ts to agree on changes points to impressive progress. As Michael reflected, "When we step back and look at the past few years, we've come a long way" and while there's still work ahead, industry is on the "right path".
⏭️ Dr Natalie Pelham reinforced the momentum with her declaration that "it's rail's time!" She outlined ONRSR's vision as an evidence-based regulator balancing safety imperatives with adaptability, transparency, and continuous improvement. Highlighting ONRSR's core values of IRIDE (Integrity, Respect, Independence, Diligence, Excellence), she provided insightful perspectives on how regulatory intelligence drives targeted activity, ensuring the regulator remains responsive to Australia's rail industry needs.
⏭️Fresh from the federal budget, Martin Stokie's presentation from the Productivity Commission noted that productivity growth is at its slowest rate in 60 years. If there were any spare 🪙, you could have heard one drop during this session on enhancing rail productivity across the government's five reform pillars. Given rail's capital-intensive nature, focus should be on optimising investment, "sweating the assets," and supporting rail freight.
⏭️Moderated by Tony Braxton-Smith, the trackside discussion on "Collaboration, Innovation and Productivity in the New Standards Era" explored critical challenges in Australia's transition toward rail #interoperability. Key themes included breaking down jurisdictional silos + tackling the "standards paradox" where stakeholders agree on consistency but expect others to adopt their approach. The conversation reframed productivity as identifying opportunities rather than cutting costs.
The morning wrapped up with Alan Fedda's timely call to action: "To get ahead of the game – get involved in the development of industry standards"!
Stay tuned for further updates...
