Just released: the “Victorian Startup Growth Report 2024” A new report from LaunchVic and dealroom.co reveals that Victoria’s startup ecosystem is growing faster than key global hubs, including Singapore, Sydney, Tel Aviv, Stockholm, Amsterdam, and Berlin. Key highlights from the Victorian Startup Growth Report 2024: → Victoria’s startup ecosystem is thriving – now home to 3,500+ startups valued at AU$132 billion, a 26-fold increase since 2016. → A major job creator – the sector has generated 63,900 jobs, with 59% based in Australia. → Almost half of these jobs come from startups founded in the past decade. → Venture capital investment is growing – AU$841.7 million invested in 2024, 7.5x higher than in 2014. → Top-performing sectors – Enterprise Software and Healthtech, home to more than 50% of Australia's startups in these sectors, with Fintech ranking third But our ecosystem still faces some hurdles. Pre-seed funding hasn't kept pace with startup creation, and only 17% of seed-funded startups reach Series A (compared to 34% in Tel Aviv). Still, the long-term trajectory remains strong. LaunchVic CEO Dr Kate Cornick highlighted the momentum of Victoria’s ecosystem: "The report highlights the incredible growth of Victoria’s startup ecosystem since 2016. If we continue this trajectory for the next five years, we will be on par with some of the world’s leading startup hubs." We’re excited to announce the Hugh Victor McKay Fund’s co-investment in Gaia Project Australia Pty Ltd, a Victorian AgTech with a game changing solution for growing leafy greens and a market potential that goes well beyond Earth. Led by founder Nadun Hennayaka, Gaia’s technology uses modular growing channels that move to create space as plants like lettuce grow, allowing growers to generate a better output of crops over a smaller area. The startup’s technology has already captured the attention of space agency NASA and now Gaia is hoping a $1.7 million seed round will help grow its impact.
