An innovative school partnership program that places university students as peer mentors in low SES high schools
About us
In2science is an innovative and proven multi-university school partnership program that places university students as peer mentors in Victorian low socio-economic schools. We use the power of mentoring relationships to increase Year 7-10 students’ enthusiasm for STEM learning, to improve student engagement, and to build aspirations for further STEM study. Since 2004, our volunteer university mentors have worked with over 78.000 students across over 2,000 semester-long placements in Victorian STEM classrooms (including 216 placements in 2022). We currently work with over 40 metropolitan and regional partner schools, the majority of which are low SES. Our mentors are trained to share three key things with their student mentees: their love and passion for STEM; their experience of studying STEM from high school through to university; and their up-to-date discipline knowledge and study skills. In doing so, they act as learning coaches, STEM role models, and mentors, working together with the teacher to complement curriculum delivery. Several external evaluations of the program demonstrate the positive impact on each group of participants: school students, teachers and schools, and university mentors. Our priorities are ensuring a significant positive impact for school students, enriching STEM education in school communities, and providing professional development across key graduate attributes for our volunteer university mentors.

We’re thrilled to share some exciting news! In2science has been awarded funding through the Victorian Department of Education’s Strategic Partnerships Program (SPP) to support the delivery of our program through to the end of 2027. This support reflects the impact we’ve made across Victoria since 2004: 🧑🏫 4,000+ mentors placed 🏫 200+ schools reached 🧑🎓 85,000+ students mentored With this support, we’ll keep connecting mentors with students through in-class and eMentoring initiatives, reaching the schools and communities that need us most and helping every student see what STEM can do for their future. Last week was National Student Volunteer Week. In2science is completely reliant on our University Student Volunteer Mentors. Our program would not exist without them - they are the people giving their time to support and inspire the next generation of diverse STEM leaders. The #NSVW2025 theme is Powered by Purpose #PoweredbyPurpose shines a light on the motivations that drive young volunteers. It’s about the fuel, values, beliefs, and passion that inspire students and young people to contribute to causes they care about. So last week we asked our mentors - why do you volunteer with In2science? We love the range of answers we got. Thank you to all of our In2science mentors - we are grateful for you! And are so proud of the impact you are making.
