With just over two weeks until we kick off recruitment for our 2027 apprentice intake, it was great to talk electrical trade opportunities with young people at the NRL Cowboys House careers day. Our Apprentice Program Leader Adrian Goldsworthy and Community Engagement Senior Advisor Kate Austin met with dozens of aspiring future tradies, sharing insights into our upcoming recruitment, what makes a great apprentice, our different trade roles, and the excellent training, pay and conditions we offer. A huge "thank you" to Cowboys Community Foundation for welcoming our team, and to the attendees who kept our stand so busy with their interest and questions. About us
Energex Limited (Energex) and its predecessor organisations have provided electricity to homes and businesses in South East Queensland since the late 19th Century. Energex was formed in 1997 to replace the South East Queensland Electricity Board (SEQEB) and until 2007 the company not only distributed electricity but also reticulated and sold gas and electricity products. The gas and electricity retail businesses and gas reticulation network were sold in 2006/07 prior to the commencement of full retail gas and electricity contestability in Queensland in July 2007. Now we distribute electricity to more than 1.4 million residential, commercial and industrial customers across a population base of around 3.2 million in South East Queensland. In 2016, we merged with regional Queensland electricity distributor Ergon Energy Network under the newly formed entity Energy Queensland. We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians and pay our respect to all Elders past, present and emerging on whose land we walk, work and live on, and their continuing connection to land, sea and community.

Not every child gets a childhood. For thousands of young Queenslanders, their homes are not safe havens of love, nurturing and trust. And many find themselves thrust into foster care or group homes with their clothes and treasures stuffed into a garbage bag 💔 That’s where Kindness for Kids in Care comes in. This fantastic Caboolture volunteer-run group works with government and the community to give kids in the child safety system a little bit of the normalcy, dignity and security that most of us take for granted…and it can start with something as simple as a suitcase 😊 Our Caboolture team has again chipped in to support Kindness for Kids in Care with the purchase of suitcases – sturdy, lockable bags in which children can safely keep and carry their belongings and the little things that matter to them. “It’s heartbreaking that this is the reality for so many children, and Kindness for Kids in Care does incredible work to help them in meaningful ways,” Area Manager Rick Madden said. “Every child deserves to feel safe and to know that they matter. Kindness for Kids in Care delivers this, and we’re very happy to support them for the second year running.” Kindness for Kids in Care also runs Queensland’s biggest community-based Christmas toy drive, handing over more than 3000 donated and lovingly wrapped gifts to Santa last year, making sure that thousands of vulnerable young Queenslanders had something to celebrate. The group also helps with school essentials, packages for teens “ageing out” of care, and basic clothing and hygiene supplies for people doing it very, very tough. It’s impactful work for a little non-profit that runs on the smell of an oily rag – check out their Facebook page for more on what they do: https://bit.ly/4djukBN 📸 Nathan Litzman, Jason Ross, Rick Madden and Michael Hayes from our Caboolture depot with Prue Aranovitch, president of Kindness for Kids in Care. #kindness4kidsincare #childsafety #fostercare #kidsincare #KindnessforKidsinCare #supportkids #volunteering #nonprofit

These big yellow boxes mightn’t look high-tech, but they’re showing a lot of promise for getting the lights back on to customers faster after flooding. 1️⃣ Energex is the first Australian power network to trial the Qld-designed, Qld-made Flood Tuff covers, which enclose and protect critical electrical equipment like transformers and ring main units. 💧 A float-activated valve system releases gas from an internal bottle as floodwaters rise, maintaining a trapped pocket of air inside the unit and preventing water from getting in and damaging critical equipment. ⚓ The covers are made of low-density polyethylene, secured with chains and ground anchors ⏱️ While we’d still need to de-energise flooded sections of the network for public safety, the Flood Tuff units would mean much faster restoration, as critical equipment wouldn’t need to be pulled apart, cleaned and dried before it could safely go back service on the network. 👍 We’ve successfully trialled three units so far and identified 150 sites in SEQ where the covers could quickly and easily be deployed ahead of a flood threat. The trial is part of our ongoing effort to boost network resilience in the face of extreme weather. 📹 Network Management Engineer Brian McMahon has been heading up this project – see what he’s got to say about how the covers can help get the lights back on faster for Queenslanders.

A case study on home battery use by our very own Graduate Engineer Emma Dyson is gaining plenty of interest from industry experts. https://lnkd.in/gVnkXzDF
Home batteries are becoming an increasingly important — and behaviourally diverse — part of the market. Using smart meter data from January 15th 2026, this case study by Emma Dyson from Energex and Ergon Energy Network shows that spot-exposed home batteries responded strongly by exporting during a period of high spot prices — while those on traditional retail plans were materially less likely to export during the same period. https://lnkd.in/g4ts2eJH

On ANZAC Day, we recognise the commitment of so many in our communities, and a large number of our own employees, in the service of our nation as members of the Australian Defence Force. We honour the immense sacrifice of Australia’s 89,000 active servicepeople who bear the legacy of the half-million-plus Aussie soldiers, sailors and airforce personnel who went before. At a time when peace feels particularly fragile, we hold in gratitude all who seek to maintain security, safety and stability; whether at ANZAC Cove 111 years ago, or working this very morning to provide disaster relief and humanitarian aid. To those who serve today, to their families, and to all who have gone before, we thank you. Got questions? As long as they're about dynamic connections all things solar storage, Peter Kilby's presentation at the #SSLQld conference has got you covered :-) (No comment on whether the hashtag #energynerds is going to trend, but Peter's recording is well worth a watch and listen.)
It's been a big two days at Solar & Storage Live Queensland #SSLQLD with plenty of thought-provoking discussion and insights. There were a few interested #energynerds who couldn't make my session, so I thought I'd throw this recording together to answer questions like -What is a #DynamicConnection? -#DOE isn't the Department of Energy? -What the #ADRP? and -How are all those freshly installed #batteries from the #CHBP behaving? Another big thanks to Emma Dyson for her work analysing the data, to Stacey Turner for giving these slides a much-needed polish and to all the amazing people at Energex and Ergon Energy Network working to deliver new #innovations like #DynamicConnections that improve outcomes for Queensland electricity consumers.

William is one of the 176 superstar apprentices coming on board as part of our 2026 intake. Along with the rest of the Southern Qld cohort, he kicked off his electrical trade training at our Toowoomba depot last week. He's also among a standout group of new starters who found their way to Energex and Ergon Energy Network through our award-winning pre-apprenticeship cadetship program in which we partner with TAFE Queensland to identify, engage with, and support fantastic school-aged talent. Will's take on how the cadetship worked for him is well worth a watch and a listen 👇 And keep an eye out for a post in a few weeks' time when we introduce all of our Apprentice Class of 2026!
For William, the cadetship gave him a head start. After completing the Ergon Energy Network and Energex Pre‑apprenticeship Program, William secured an Electrical Fitter Mechanic apprenticeship, gaining the confidence, skills and hands-on experience he needed. This included three weeks of work experience at his local (Warwick) Ergon Energy Network depot, along with online and practical electrotechnology block training, delivered through TAFE Queensland.
