Committee for Melbourne members were treated to an exclusive behind the scenes Best Practice Tour of the State Library Victoria today. Commencing in the Redmond Barry Reading Room, a fantastic history lesson on the Library was provided by our expert guides, Catherine O'Callaghan & Caitlin Gilmour. Then members were shown through various areas of the Library, including the La Trobe Reading Room (the Dome), Card catalogue, Pendulum Staircase and the Creative Acts exhibition in the Victoria Gallery. The opportunity for members to view a number of areas not available for access to the General Public, in this beloved institution, was a wonderful experience. Thank you to the State Library Victoria for hosting us today and we recommend all our members take the time to see and connect with this Melbourne icon. A timely and insightful discussion with Victorian Treasurer Jaclyn Symes this week, following the delivery of her second State Budget. It was a privilege for Committee for Melbourne, in partnership with EY Australia, to host an exclusive lunch bringing together members and leaders from across our network at such an important moment for Victoria. In a year shaped by economic uncertainty, global shifts and a looming state election, the Treasurer shared valuable perspectives on the key features of the Budget and the priorities influencing Victoria’s path forward. What stood out most was the quality of the discussion – hosted by EY’s Managing Partner, Melbourne, Michael Daly. As always, these moments reinforce the importance of creating space for direct, constructive engagement between business and government and we thank Treasurer Symes and all who joined us for your engagement. Today’s Staff Lunch & Learn for National Reconciliation Week was a powerful reminder that reconciliation is not simply a moral aspiration, it’s a business imperative. Through David Wemyss’s session, we explored the history of colonisation and its ongoing impacts, reinforcing that reconciliation must start with truth-telling and a genuine understanding of context, not blame, but learning. Our Reconciliation Action Plan reflects this commitment, focusing on listening, learning and building the capability needed to drive meaningful change across the workplaces and communities we support: https://lnkd.in/gvPuNagM We were also pleased to have VCCI Board Member Professor Peter Radoll PhD join us for the session. Reconciliation takes time, intention and action, and conversations like this are an important step forward.

International education continues to play an important role in strengthening Melbourne’s global connections and future talent pipeline. Recently, La Trobe University welcomed 18 students from PSB Academy (Singapore) as part of a study tour supported through the Victorian Government’s Yes to International Students Fund (YISF). Throughout the week-long program, students engaged in academic workshops, hands-on laboratory experiences, industry engagement activities, and a regional visit to Bendigo — providing exposure to both metropolitan and regional study and career opportunities in Victoria. The program also highlighted the strength of Melbourne’s education ecosystem, with students experiencing firsthand the value of industry-connected learning, world-class facilities, and Victoria’s welcoming multicultural community. Importantly, these initiatives strengthen long-standing international partnerships while encouraging future study pathways, research collaboration, and global workforce connections. As Victoria continues to position itself as a leading destination for international education, programs like these demonstrate the broader impact of student mobility and cross-border collaboration.

Committee for Melbourne members joined us today at an insightful Leadership Luncheon at MCEC with Natalie O'Brien AM, CEO of the Victorian Convention and Event Trust. Natalie shared valuable insights into the leadership, strategy and innovation behind the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre and the exciting future of the Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre, ahead of its opening in July 2026. It was fascinating to hear how MCEC delivers world-class experiences, supports tourism and business growth, and continues to strengthen our state’s reputation as a global events destination. Thank you to Natalie and the team at VCET for hosting us at their iconic Melbourne venue.

A powerful initiative from Committee for Melbourne member Police Veterans Victoria. Their upcoming Corporate Luncheon is more than an event, it’s a reminder that behind every badge is a story, and that those who have served should never stop belonging. Taking place on Friday 17 July at Crown Palladium, this signature event brings together business, community and the police family to honour service, share stories and support police veterans and their families. Funds raised will directly support vital programs, from wellbeing and peer support to practical assistance, ensuring care continues long after service ends.
