I’m exposing the Canberra Innovation Network for what it is. And I won’t apologise for it.
They say #Canberra is a public service town. No startup culture. No real capital. No ambition beyond the bureaucracy.
Once again CBRIN proved that wrong.
36 companies. 100+ investors. AI, deep tech, biotech, sovereign capability.
Level 4 at CBRIN was humming. Not in a performative way. In a this is real way.
The conversations in that room — founders building things that matter, investors who flexbus in from interstate because they can’t afford to ignore what’s happening here — that’s not ecosystem theatre. That’s ecosystem momentum.
I loved the conversations with Carlos Aguilera — fundraiz.ai, Rhys Kissell — Panop, Cheng Yu — Trellis Data, Careen Matthews — humaneer, Jin Chan Yum Wai — Shrine Comics Pty Ltd, Meg Salter — RecruitableHub, Alicia Martin — Tapermate, Juan Felipe Torres — SORET TECH and many, many more.
• This is what innovation success actually looks like.
[If you made it this far — Like and Share, I’m chasing 😱 Rayn Ong for the merch 🫣]
I was also fortunate enough to attend the formal event. Chief Minister Andrew Barr spoke to why the ACT Government is a proud and committed supporter of #CBRIN — and why this ecosystem deserves national attention.
When government, capital and founders align in the same room with the same intent — you feel it. Thursday, I felt it.
To every startup founder reading this:
This is the environment you need. Not just for the capital. For the proximity. For the conversations that start at a networking event and end with your idea becoming a company.
Bring your ideas. People in this room don’t just care — they want to see your impact on the world.
To every investor, venture partner or institution not looking at Canberra:
That is an opportunity lost. Full stop.
The pipeline is real. The founders are exceptional. The research base, the university partnerships, the sovereign capability angle — Canberra is not a secondary market. It never was. It never will be.
As for me and the team at black vc:
Canberra Innovation Network — thank you.
We love this ecosystem. We love what it’s becoming.
#blackvc and Workspace by black vc exist as a direct reflection of this expansion — an interconnected fabric of innovation, capital and community.
“A rising tide lifts all boats.”
And we are here for it. Fully. Loudly. With everything we’ve got.
Thank you to Petr Adámek, Craig Davis and the entire CBRIN team. This Investor Showcase built since 2021 is extraordinary.
Canberra. Punching above its weight. Every single time. 🖤
