Traditional robots operate in steps: perceive, pause, plan, then act. But the real world doesn’t freeze while a machine thinks. Researchers from Google DeepMind are tackling one of robotics’ biggest constraints — the planning bottleneck. Their approach, known as Harmonic Reasoning, merges perception and motion into a single continuous process. Instead of stopping to compute the next move, the system updates actions in real time as new visual data flows in. A single 10-billion-parameter model can control different robotic bodies, handling tasks like folding boxes, sorting components, closing zippers, and adapting instantly when conditions change — all without task-specific reprogramming. They’re reportedly gathering around 10,000 hours of real-world robotic data each week, backed in part by NVIDIA. This signals a broader shift: training AI directly in physical environments, not just simulations. Allonic has developed a robotic hand using a process called 3D Tissue Braiding — weaving high-strength fibers around a lightweight internal frame, similar to how connective tissue wraps around bone in the human body. Instead of relying on screws, bearings, cables, or complex mechanical joints, a single automated process forms the tendons, soft structure, and compliant mechanics all at once. The result is a hand that’s both durable and naturally soft, making it safer for close human interaction. Its movements look fluid and lifelike, with impressive dexterity despite the simplified construction. What makes this especially significant is manufacturing speed. Going from digital design to finished part can happen in minutes, dramatically reducing cost and iteration time compared to traditional robotic hands. It feels similar to the early impact of 3D printing — but applied to functional robotic bodies.
