Living Open Source Training - Part 2 In yesterday's class, we focused on containers as a way to deploy applications, and we discussed databases. Several course participants mentioned using Oracle. I have nothing against Oracle, but what is the annual license fee of that? So I asked “Why no PostgreSQL”? The answer was simple: "We'd love to, but we lack the knowledge so we can’t." This situation leads to the current setup where expensive Oracle consultants are regularly flown into Zambia. This cycle of proprietary software dependency isn't helping the country progress - instead, it's directing investments away from local talent and straight to big tech shareholders. Imagine how different things could be if this organization transitioned from Oracle to PostgreSQL. The software itself is free, and if support is needed, it costs just a fraction of Oracle's licensing fees. And here's the real game-changer: because the software is free, anyone can download it and develop their skills in open source databases at zero cost. This means organizations can stop looking abroad for expertise and start hiring locally, creating much-needed jobs right here in Zambia. This principle applies not just to databases, but to the entire technology stack: Linux, Containers, and Kubernetes. Few months back, with my team, I did a big migration of centralized logging within our #azure Tenant. During the process we decided to keep "old" Log Analytics Workspaces for at least 6 months (historic data for CISO). Relatively quickly we noticed that there is still some ingestion towards old LAWs, although we changed all diagnostic settings and DCRs to point to the new ones. Investigation brought us to a disturbing facts and a "hidden" info within Microsoft docs - "If you need to delete a resource, rename, or move a resource, or migrate it across resource groups or subscriptions, first delete its diagnostic settings." (source: https://lnkd.in/dJ2wt5B3). If you do not follow the advise above, you will end up with hidden (completely) diagnostic settings resources that will continue to make some ingestion. In these "old" LAWs it was just metrics (non-billable) which was in a way ok, but then we decided to check the new ones. Investigation showed us that we have ~200MB of billable data within 24h time range!!! You might think this is a small amount to be bothered about, but if you think on a scale of thousands Tenants with a lot a of data and changes, this becomes a nice income for Microsoft. My question is, how many #azure #architects or #engineers are aware of this feature ("it's not a bug, it's a feature")?
