before purchasing a MacBook, i knew all i was going to use it for was a portable DAW for Logic Pro x, i was largly debting between the pro and the air, after 1 week i am glad to report that the macbook air i purchased is fully capable of running Logic Pro x, with many tracks, and the battery life is great. logic is like the lungs ofmy studio, allowing everything to breath no matter where i am. i love logics wide variety of stock sounds that come with the software, also the parameters in which you can adjust sounds are seemingly infinite. overall if i had to chnage anyhting with logic it would be to automatically connect when linking instruments and midi connections. after the learning curve associated with logic and pairing instruments/ running channels was all figured out i was in a creative environment. also one more tip of advice would be to allow siri to communicate and help me accomplish easy tasks like, “hitting record” “pausing” adding in an automated drummer and stufff like that would be pretty awesome to have at my fingertips. but as a simple multit track organizer i couldnt be more pleased. i do also have hard times navigating my main workig space. i believe a touch screen for logic would be of great assistance in the workflo issue associated with all technology
There is no denying Logic Pro X is an excellent DAW. Having been forced to use it for school for the last twelve months I have gone from loathing it to enjoying my time with it. If this is the first DAW you purchase and plan on learning throughougly this is an excellent starting point as it is already industry standard. If you are already used to another DAW such Cake-walk, FL Studio, Ableton, or Studio One it will take some time to adjust to the new work flow and some of the interface/functions can be a bit unintuative, however, if you stick with it you will find a powerful and versatile piece of music production software. It makes scoring to picture a breeze and mixing in dolby/surround sound is simple and very intuitive. The one genre I would caution new uesrs againts making in Logic is EDM. Logic makes it extremely difficult to produce Electronic Dance Music, there is no snap to grid on the automation curves and the way it handles selection automation perameters in 3rd party VST's baffles me. You would have a much easier time starting out in FL-Studio or Ableton Live with EDM production, Logic will likely stiffle your creativity as an EDM producer if you've never opened a DAW before.
I honestly used to have a terrible opinion of Logic Pro X and how buggy the software can be at times, but since I have tried downloading software alternatives I actually can say that Logic is the best for the price range. I don’t like that Pro Tools is now a subscription service rather than an outright software, so I don’t see the point in doing that because you always end up paying more for it per month than what you get out of it, especially if you’re not getting paid to produce everything you do. So far I have gotten around 100 solid productions out of Logic without it being an issue. My older files still open on the software. I have written and complained to them about particular things such as the program freezing due to multiple software instruments and I noticed that in their next update it was improved. Either way, I don’t particularly like Mac platforms for gaming and intense music creation because it won’t always work with your hardware and Mac is known to be less compatible than PC in many ways and harder to upgrade. But for Mac… it’s a great program that will take your music to a much better place.
I have tried many DAW’s. I have used Live, Cubase, Bitwig and Pro Tools. They are all excellent and capable DAWs. However, after using Logic Pro X, it is hard to migrate to any other music software. I find myself able to create music with relative ease that the other DAWs just are not capable of. The MIDI capabilities alone are second to none in Logic and the ability to compose music in all styles makes it the best of the best.Another huge plus is the constant and free updates Apple provides… updates that are really upgrades in the quality and number of plug-ins and soft instruments built into the program.I have Waves Mercury, 2 UAD octo cores with most of their plugs, Sound Toys, Plugin Alliance, Sonnox, Melodyne, Izotope and others… all at their latest iterations and they work flawlessly.Composing music or just recording a band is easy with this software. Whether you are into acoustic, jazz, electronica or rock, this software package is the best there is and gets updated constantly by Apple.Apple takes this software very seriously and I commend them for their excellence. Version 10.4 is stunning.
logic is an amazing app, as a long time user there are amazing improvements. however, the new audio fx plugin design changes are terrible. the new phat fx too, too flat. first of all hard to navigate secondly they are just so ugly. not used to anything being ugly in logic. overall design of all the plugins is so inconsistent. this is an audio production app but mac users are usually sensitive to design. the new midi fx design is great, they are beautiful and very clear and easy to use. one likes just looking at them and with many plugins open its easy to see what is what. with the audio ones they all look the same. the super flat design makes it hard to navigate. space designer was a great looking plugin very clear and easy to navigate. now it’s “streamlined” and so ugly and the sections of controls no longer exiswt, one has to read all the controls to find the way. very unpractical especially for all of us who have been using it for years. i understand the flat design direction but most of these dont look designed at all, some visual separation of controls would be very helpful. also the new toolbar icons are so ugly and there is no option to have icon only (without text) which limits the number of actions we can place there. the previos design was great visually (also logic x). is there no unified design team working on this amazing app?? between the old pixelated plugins, the beauiful midi fx ones and the bland new flat ones, it’s a visual mess. otherwise a great app, my favorite daw.
If you have EXS instruments created in a Logic version prior to L9 - there is a problem for the EXS to find the samples. Unlike all Logic versions before 9, there is no option to manually show the EXS where to look for the samples. If you are lucky enough to have the original old hard drive you created the samples on, and you are able to somehow connect it to your Mac - it will work. But copy the folder of samples to your new drive(s) and it stops working. Better hope your old drive doens’t die. Appe engineering is aware of the problem - they just don’t care. This doesn’t matter if you are a relative new user of Logic - but for us old-timers ( I have been in Logic since vers 3) it is a huge problem. As it is known, that Apple bought up Redmatica, who produced the program, that would fix this (EXS Manager) - it is a mystery that functionality hasn’t been made available at least, if they don’t want to fix Spotlight ( which is the underlying problem). Shame on you Apple for messing up Emagic’s great product. Lots of long standing bugs have never been fixed in Logic, but with every update new bugs are introduced. Good luck running a session relying on punching into a track. It doesn’t work reliably. Zoom settings are having random weird problems.
I purchased logic after the 90-day trial because I was so impressed with how easy it was to create, but also how versatile and accessible the daw felt. Coming from Fl studio it was similar enough that I was comfortable getting started but different enough that I didn't feel I was using a carbon copy. That being said, while the creating aspect of Logic is very fun and intuitive, I can't in good faith recommend this product to anyone without talking about all of the bugs and glitches that occur FAR too often for my taste. While crashing isn't as egregious as other bugs, it does happen from time to time with almost no apparent reason. The main bugs that I seemed to run into the most are those concerning audio and my audio interface. Of all the daws I use(Studio one, Fl Studios, Logic) this one gives me the most trouble with audio dropouts or sometimes no audio at all. To the feedback problems that occur from nowhere splitting my ears and patients alike. I do understand that some of these problems can be attributed to the fact that I'm a novice, but isn't the point of logic to make it easier for a novice to grow and perfect their skills alongside the DAW instead of fighting it every step of the way? As I said, when it comes to creating in logic the possibilities are endless, however, when it comes to production and audio recording it can be a downright nightmare sometimes. I say this to say, try out the demo and push it to the max to see if the bugs and glitches are enough of a problem to detract from your creative process. If not, go ahead and get it; you won't be disappointed. If not and you're like me; I'd say stick with the daw you're already currently using or try somewhere else.
Hands down better than Pro Tools and any other DAW out there. If you’re looking for an easy to understand, easy to use, fluid GUI, then look no further. However, it does have on issue now with Flex Pitch and Flex Tim. It automatically “analyzes and detects” the tempo of a recorded audio region and quatizes it to where the DAW thinks it should be. Total disaster when only trying to use Flex Pitch and not edit the time. When you turn off Flex and Follow, all of your time and pitch corrections disappear. I don’t want it to follow. I just want to use flex. Nothing can fix this. I have been looking in Apple Forums and trying to find a solution for about a week now. The artifacts that now happen when using flex are so bad the audio almost becomes unusable. Also, I’ve seen some reviews about getting system overloads. All I’m going to say is, if you’re buying a MacBook Air just to use Logic, you need to rethink that. No MacBook Air is going to have the processor or the Ram to run large Logic Project files with 3rd party plugins. Please get a Mac or a MacBook Pro, don’t waste your money.
I am grateful for this update and the enhancement of stock tools that I find myself using more often compared to 3rd party tools. The workflow is more intuitive, and I love all of the new features. I admit, I was not a big fan of using EXS24 and was actually intimidated, but the new tutorial layout broke down to me how to use Quick Sampler. I love the new method to import samples directly into software instruments, and I'm a big fan of the Remix FX and the use of Logic Remote to help achieve those sounds. The way how Drum Machine Designer works speaks for itselfI also appreciate how you guys don't just change the GUI for the sake of it, but add improvements and new features to make it better. I hope this can be done for all of the ancient plugins left on Logic. I would also like to see more performance improvement for those of us who tend to use a lot of tracks (100 ), and a better sounding glide from Sampler for 808s akin to FL Studio. Maybe even a Look Up preview option for Logic project files where you can preview songs before you open them in a light weight way. Just ideasLive Loops and drum sequencer are an interesting addition and I'll have to see how it can enhance or add to my music production. I can go on and on, but all in all - a stellar update. Thanks for helping me on my journey to create the BESTAt this price, this DAW is truly the most powerful DAW for buck, and it's amazing that we still get all of this for free. Thank YOU!
This software used to be the best, at least for me anyway. Then I purchased a M2 Mac mini, and everything started to go very wrong. At one point I had everything working fantastically, plug ins working great, software synths, etc. Then the first of many updates to the OS and to Logic and now I am just fed up with trying to figure this out. I have almost 25 years of studio and computer experience, maybe I am just an old dude that should just give up. Software randomly cuts audio, session players create notes, then audio nothing. I can bounce in place to continue, but then lose the ability to edit anything the way I want to. So I guess give up. I wish I could give this software zero stars, because it was once so awesome, now it’s just a pile of ones and zeros that are for me useless. And after over forty years of being impressed with Apple hardware and support, I am not anymore. This is now just a company looking for maximum profit with as little support as possible, or maybe none. If you are using a different DAW and are thinking about switching….don’t bother, unless you have an unlimited budget and unlimited time, because most of the time you will be spending will be on trying to figure out problems and NOT creating!
10.4.6 I wish i never updated to this version. i was holding off until it was summer and im now running sessions and in the middle of a session the app will just close itself down or crash. Not sure what thats about and on older versions of logic i haven’t had that happen before. I think with the touch bar upgrades that are being introduced are cause us who only have pretouch bar Macs are being effected by the bug filled upgrades. Can’t wait for apple to address this and do an update. We certainly need one. some of the new features are great if it didn’t bug out on me so much. I used to be a Reasons guy and i still use it but logic was the common thread with most other musicians that i work with so i got it to be more compatible with the industry standard although reasons 10 is off the chain. Logic is fast but reasons gives me more freedom (Unlike Apple loops or Apple anything) of creativity fo all the true musicians not just producers. loading a session takes forever, ecspecially when your sounds are on external drives to save space or cut down on the cpu processing rabbit hole. need a update that fixes bugs not bringing more pest!
Just reignited my songwriting and musical performance and I want to create a studio album. Considering that I am already heavily invested in the Apple ecosystem, I chose to purchase a MacBook Pro M4 Pro chip with the plan of using Logic Pro as my DAW and since I’m a keyboardist, perform all tracks. I purchased everything a little over a year ago and have been teaching myself and acclimating myself to Logic Pro. Everything was going smoothly… UNTIL NOW! This update to Logic Pro 12 has screwed up everything; reintroduced a learning curve that virtually erases months of self-teaching, and now after reading many of the most recent reviews that include people who have been using Logic Pro extensively for years, Apple has managed to ruin a staple product of their ecosystem. I am an IT professional and 95% of all clients I have is Windows based… so this MacBook Pro (other than keeping myself updated with MacOS for the 5% of my clients), will serve as an expensive paperweight for I am ceasing all projects I’ve been working on in Logic Pro… and that’s all I bought it for. What was this for? To push the Creator Studio subscription that comes with all these programs I don’t need? iPhone 17 PM; Apple Watch; aforementioned MacBook Pro; Apple Card; iPad; AirPods Pro (all generations)… you name the Apple product, I have it. But this has been a building disappointment for the past 3+ years! And now Apple has managed to ruin Logic Pro! What a disaster! I think this may be the beginning of my departure from the Apple ecosystem and join all my fellow colleagues with what most IT professionals choose. I was one of the few that held out, for stability. And now Apple has ruined all of that.
