  • Using Excel is like second nature to me now.

    The Numbers Guy 64

I started using a spreadsheet software about 33 years ago actually I started out after I became a supervisor at the company, I worked for 27 years. I actually learned how to use this type of software on Quatro Pro which is what the company had at that time. I basically used it to track my employee’s productivity, earned hours and attendance. After about 2 years in this position the company made a switch to Excel. I immediately found it to be easier to use and had more capability than the Quatro Pro. I then started using it for the same purpose as well as tracking my budget performance each day of the month as well as projecting my budget needs for the upcoming physical year. When I then moved to a position in engineering for this company for 8 years being in supervision. In doing this I learned to use it in even more ways. First, I learned to track productivity of new machine tools I was responsible for or to track actual efficiency of machine tools that I had recently brought into the plant versus what my projections that I used to get approval for the purchase of. Later I learned to use Excel to assist me in speed of making programs for some of these CNC machine tools by importing dimensions from Excel to the CAM software we used. I also later learned to use Excel to import and export dimensions to and from the 3D modeling software that I used. When I took a new job as the aluminum processing quality manager with a Japanese auto manufacture that begins with an H. I used Excel to design all my quality gages in the same way as before with my 3D modeling software that I designed and purchased. This was very important since the plant I went to work for then was early in the startup process. Once we got into full scale production, I used Excel to important data from our leak test machines to track and quantify the total leak problems that we experienced. This helped me determine which defects that were repetitive which needed my departments engineers attention and which ones were truly random.

  • STUCK WITH ONLINE USE ONLY! WHAT??

    ProExplorer

I have had this account for many yrs. Why suddenly am I unable to use it on my desktop but instead have been "Forced" to only use it web based? taht is crazy! Also, why are so many users having on going issues, and yet, oh look, not a SINGLE response from a CSR on your own apps feedback page? Really? I can't count the people (and Im talking into the hundreds) that are complaining about the inability to get any help from CSR's with Microsoft Co. YOu can hit us up for feedback but you can't respond to those who write in, attempt to all (phones used to work!), or even post info on here. That's really sad for a company your size. I finally reloaded Excel and "think" its working without being required to go webbased again,...which FORCES me to save to OneDrive and yet I need corp. files saves (securely due to HIPPA Regs), on a external hardrive back up. I'd ask "how" but I already see not a single perso has revievved a comment from ANYONE at Microsoft. Come on guys, enough already. Get us some help out here. PS I and thounsands of others on socal media have already been warned....DO NOT UPDATE WORD app or it will be rendered useless. So I have not updated taht, out of fear! Sad when we have to fear a company we have trusted so many yrs! Pls get CSR people on phones and answering emails, and respondiing on here asap! Or you may find ppl begin to use other apps. You have been the best, so "was" block busters" and a few other has beens,....lets not go down that road. Just get help to help us!

  • Unaddressed bugs that kill the app.

    LABeachGuy

I'm an avid Excel user. The windows version is solid, I've been on the mac version for about 3 years and Microsoft is ignoring a few big issues that kill the experience. 1) Nothing... absolutely nothing.. stays on the clipboard. It falls off, I'm constantly recopying data I just copied to paste it into another Excel sheet or workbook. 2) The right mouse button/click option randomly stops working, so I have to reboot the app (but works fine in my other apps). 3). Some form fields aren't large enough to display the formulas - example, Chart formula fields under the Chanage Source option, so they have to be copied into a 3rd party text editor to make changes and then pasted back in. In addition, you can't edit in the field or it starts selecting random cells and including them in the equation (if you delete or move the curser forward). Beyond all of that, I'm not sure why they decided to create a different layout? It's entirely different from the Windows version, so there's a learning curve. As an example, 4) the automatic formual option is a royal pain on the Mac. It gets in the way more than it helps, so I do all of the equations by hand. I'd be in trouble if I didn't know the equations.

  • Absurd

    Youdon Needtaknow

free download, but can't save anything without a microsoft account AND a $70 a year subscription . That is after they triangulate your identity and devices multiple ways multiple times. Then their "verify you are a human puzzles" provide just about unrecognizeable garbage for photos, numerics and audio clips. You spend 10 minutes trying to satisfy their garbage puzzles and absurd identity triangulation for an hour; then go there how they apparently encrypt and protect your identity; loose the app completely for 30 minutes; then all of a sudden 3 hours later it's open and unuseable without a subscription fee and a microsoft data storage account. What a waste! On a similar but another note, who said tax payers wanted their tax money being used on crappy google chrome books in schools? WHO? They don't even work and I may go blind trying to read the screen and really my 14 year old has to practically sit on my lap in order for both of us to read the google chrome school issued lap top screen at the same time. Why is money just flowing to these kniving and poorly functioning companies?1?! Then the customer service 1-800 rep on the phone to verify I was not charged for this garbage is not even a representative in my country, not my fellow citizen, and not speaking my language. Got no where.

  • Font Too Small on Mac

    GSPhilly 967

I really like excel on Windows. I actually prefer windows operating system overall, however, I needed a MacBook for work. I don’t want to have to carry two laptops around, so obviously I just bring the one I need (the MacBook). That means that I have to often times use Excel on MacOS. The problem is that all of the fonts and cells are way smaller than they would be on Excel in Windows. It’ll be the same file, but everything will just be tiny. I know Mac OS has something to do with it, because they obviously have very nice screens that they like to show off by making the fonts very small. However, it gets really annoying to have to zoom in all the time just to see the document correctly. Also, the menu has the same issue. Everything is just smaller. My eyesight is okay too. I’m only 28 and I’ve had good vision my whole life. So, it’s just something that is a problem just because I have poor vision. It’s just annoying to have what is supposed to be great software, running on a great computer and there’s no way to adjust these settings. Can we just get some options from Microsoft and/or Apple so that we custom the size each cell renders as well as adjusting the buttons on the menu.

  • Years dealing with the same bugs and errors

I have had excel for years and like most of us, we have seen very little improvement to the bugs that destroy the quality of Microsoft Suite. In this instance, excel and word are HORRIBLE. If we had another option, I would be using it by now - knowing that we dont I guess is why you lack the incentive to make significant improvements to your products. Thank goodness for antitrust laws! Excel crashes as many times as it please while working, the alert boxes wont close unlesss you force quit a document which opens in auto recovery only to find it out it never recovered where you left off - if you're lucky enough to remember where you left off. Even where you select pickup where I left off, is inaccurate which I'm sure you are aware of also. One day, I can delete content in a row or column, the next day delete doesnt work. It is so unreliable and unfortuntately cannot be my clutch for getting work done. The file doesnt always open when downloaded through an attachment, and no- there is nothing wrong with the atachments - it is part of a larger issue with Excel. Your company's whole suite is unbearable to work with for serious projects. I am beyond exhausted and frustrated with all of your products.

  • I love MS Office and Excel

    Becky in Cincinnati

Years ago, computers/laptops came with MSOffice, then it started costing. I actually have office 2000 on an old laptop that still works. Got an iMac and it came with 365 and after it ended at the end of the year, I hesitated and tried to use the apple product that came loaded. Hated it and finally got Office 2020 for that computer. Then got a newer MacBook with no office built in except apple’s product (stupid). I tried, I really tried to use it but it and the “pages” (word substitute) programs just drove me batty. Finally got Office 2024 for this laptop. Frustrating to not be able to do things I knew how to do on Office 2000 but still SO MUCH NICER than anything Apple has come up with. It is a breath of fresh air as well as a sigh of relief to finally have office on this laptop.

  • Minus one star for overbearing OneDrive tie in

    kramtterrab

Not sure whether it was a lack of resources, poor planning or an intentional act of pushy programming, but Micosoft has presumptuously woven in OneDrive to their preeminent suite of office software. Saving a file should always default to physical storage or at least provide all options on the front end, not default to OneDrive. It is annoying. What if I don't want to autosave files to my OneDrive but to my desktop? Well, long gone are those days. I wish Microsoft didn't make their products feel more like Google online apps. I don't want Microsoft 365. Some people do. I get that. I want old school Microsoft power/functionaility when I download the individual software/app for one of their programs. I don't want to be forced to use OneDrive. Divorce the two, make OneDrive an option on cloud storage, but let your programming recognize OneDrive is not the default option for most Mac users.

  • Excel is good no doubt but slow when using on the M1 Mac book

    Jeo134

Excel does not need any introduction. It is great, but when I am using excel on my M1 mac book, despite the M1 mac book being faster, the excel lags quite a bit. When navigating through the excel sheet, the data and graphs keep disappearing and appearing due to the lag. Sometimes, the sheet looks blank, and then data and charts will suddenly pop up because of the lag. I recently bought a Surface 8 pro just because of this issue, but even Microsoft’s own “pro” device also does not run smoothly with Excel. Microsoft, can you please tell me why this happens, and is there a plan to fix it? Unfortunately, Microsoft no longer has any physical stores, so I called for support after buying a Surface 8 pro, Pen, and keyboard for over 1300$. Initially, I was told to hold, and after more than half an hour of holding, the line was disconnected. So, I had to return the surface pro 8. Very disappointed.

  • I only use it because I have to, but it works

    bengregg

I used Excel years ago on Microsoft Windows, and hated how often Windows would crash and I'd lose my data. However, this version on Mac seems to be pretty stable (no crashes so far) and is in many ways more intuitive to use (at least for me) than Google Sheets. I would probably give it 5 stars, but I think the pricing for Microsoft office in general is pretty ridiculous, given that it's basically 30-year old software that hasn't really evolved that much in the past few years. I do think the move to the Cloud (Office 365) was a great idea, but when you consider that Google Docs is free, it's hard to justify paying as much as we do for this product, especially when you consider that Microsoft's move to .xlsx file format (from .xls) was essentially so that they could continue their monopoly. Boo.

  • The fact that I HAVE to make a title is stupid

    Insert Required Nickname

Not as good as Google Docs, I have to use excel for work and the QoL features in Sheets puts excell to shame. There is such a stiff and corporate feeling to the Microsoft suite now. The title should speak for itself. There are so many decisions like that the pile up and it makes the user experience so awful. Excel is better than most of the Microsoft products out there but it’s still lacking. An easy QoL example is when I’m done enter data into the cells horizontally and I want to drop a row and go back to the beginning of where I started….I can’t. Tab moves me over a cell and pressing enter drops me one row below of where I ended. Maybe it’s just me but with AI being put into everything why couldnt there be a system what works with me? If I do the same task 8 times in a spread sheet and it doesn’t learn what I’m trying to do then AI shouldn’t be marketed one bit. Overall all the design decisions I see getting put into MS products don’t make lead me to believe that MS has the best intentions for the end User at heart

  • Great product but annoying issues on the Mac version

    Mitschku

The only reason why I gave Excel a third star is because I cannot deny that it is and always has been terrific software with endless possibilities. That is still the case even on the Mac operating system and it's far better than Numbers or Sheets. With that said, there are so many issues that are so frustrating and I don't know where to start. I'll start here: Microsoft products do not do well when in full-screen mode. There are a couple of noticeable bugs such as an inability to change the name of a worksheet and more when it is in full screen mode. There are so many little things that is frustrating such as the inability to use a keyboard shortcut to select all of a set of data when a dialogue box is up. So much more can be said, but overall, it would be nice to see Microsoft invest more attention into Excel for Mac.
