1Well, you have applied and they want to chat with you, presumably to see how good of a fit you might be to then decide to proceed to an official interview. You can either have the meeting, and both sides get relevant information on the application, or you can skip the meeting and not give them more info to make a decision to invite to an interview. Your call.Jon Custer– Jon Custer2023-07-20 16:16:30 +00:00Commented Jul 20, 2023 at 16:16

hi @Jon Custer, thank you. The situation is that I am currently in another country, so basically, I cannot attend the conference. Do you think there's any difference if I request a Zoom meeting before (or after) the conference, or a face-to-face meeting after the conference? (I will be back in the USA a few days after that conference.)user167220– user1672202023-07-20 16:28:15 +00:00Commented Jul 20, 2023 at 16:28

This doesn't qualify as an answer, but mainly a comment about the appropriateness of such an "informal" meeting. Do you know if this is part of their official vetting process? If not, then I would feel uncomfortable about what role (if any) this meeting should play in the decision to interview you. Does anyone else get this vibe from having (what could be) a pre-interview that is unsanctioned by the hiring institution?user138719– user1387192023-07-20 18:10:27 +00:00Commented Jul 20, 2023 at 18:10

@user138719 - depends a lot on actual policy. Telephone pre-screening interviews are certainly sanctioned by my (non-univerisity) HR department in order to better determine fit between the candidate and the posting beyond what is in the standard application submittal material.Jon Custer– Jon Custer2023-07-20 18:22:49 +00:00Commented Jul 20, 2023 at 18:22

A tag is a keyword or label that categorizes your question with other, similar questions. Choose one or more (up to 5) tags that will help answerers to find and interpret your question.
Use tags that describe what your question is about, not what it merely relates to. For example almost every question on this site is eventually related to research, but only questions about performing research should be tagged research.
Use tags describing circumstances only if those circumstances are essential to your question. For example, if you have a question about citations that came up during writing a thesis but might as well have arisen during writing a paper, do not tag it with thesis.
- complete the sentence: my question is about...
- use tags that describe things or concepts that are essential, not incidental to your question
- favor using existing popular tags
- read the descriptions that appear below the tag
If your question is primarily about a topic for which you can't find a tag:
- combine multiple words into single-words with hyphens (e.g. graduate-admissions), up to a maximum of 35 characters
- creating new tags is a privilege; if you can't yet create a tag you need, then post this question without it, then ask the community to create it for you
