Frontier 5.0 is shipping!

The final version of Frontier 5.0 for Mac and Windows is now available.

The full release is on the Download Page.

If you've been using Frontier 5.0b8 or greater, you can upgrade instead.

Frontier 5.0 Change Notes lists all the changes in the Frontier application since Frontier 4.2.3. If you're migrating from 4.2.3, this page is a good place to start learning about what's new.

For Frontier 4 users who are moving to Frontier 5, bookmark Migrating from Frontier 4. That's where we list pages that describe the changes from Frontier 4.2.3 to 5.0 and suggest strategies for upgrading.

New release: Frontier 5.0fc2.

The full release is on the Download Page.

The upgrader release of Frontier 5.0fc2 is available on the Upgrade page. If you've been running the 5.0b8 root or greater you can use this upgrader, otherwise see the Download Page to download the full version of Frontier 5.0fc2.

New release: Frontier 5.0fc1. This is the final candidate release of Frontier 5.

The full release is available right now on the Download Page.

We've pushed back the ship date until January 30, to allow fc1 some testing before shipping the final version. Read the announcement.

If you have bugs to report in Frontier 5.0fc1, the best place to report them is on the Frontier-Work list. Other Frontier lists are okay, too. If you're not on any of the lists, but have a bug report, send email to brent@scripting.com.

Windows NT users: see Installing the Psapi.dll. You'll need this DLL for certain Frontier verbs to work.

For Windows Active Desktop users: Frontier and the Active Desktop details a change you can make in your Internet Explorer preferences to work better with Frontier.

For Mac users: UserLand Utilities are extra utility apps that will ship with Frontier 5. You can download them now.

Frontier developers Alan German and Preston Holmes have released cross-platform Frontier 5 versions of, respectively, tcpcmd and NetFrontier.

John Delacour: Verbi gives scripters fast access to verb info in UserLand's Frontier 5 Verbs website.

For experienced users: new app-only release of Frontier 5.0b9 for Mac and Windows on the FastTrack site.

Monday 1/19/98

For Windows users: if you're using the Active Desktop and MSIE as your web browser, MSIE will work better with Frontier if you change one of your browser's preferences. Go to MSIE's View menu and choose Internet Options. Click on the Advanced tab. Expand "Browsing" if it's not open. Check the box next to "Browse in a new process." Click the OK button. This will allow MSIE to recycle windows, rather than opening a new one each time you publish or preview a web page. Requires Frontier 5.0b8 -- see below.

This release is most important for Windows users. Two key bugs were fixed, one relating to page rendering, and other relating to threading. Extra bonus, now the zoom box works right! Whew... I don't think this one's a turkey!

System requirements Macintosh 68K or PowerPC running System 7.1 or greater. IBM PC-compatible running Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 or greater. UserLand Frontier 5.0a18 or greater.
